How Much Does a Custom Engagement Ring Cost in Denver?
Updated on  April 22, 2026 by  Coco T.

How Much Does a Custom Engagement Ring Cost in Denver?

If you’re considering a custom engagement ring, one of the first questions you’re probably asking is: How much does it cost?

The truth is, custom engagement rings can vary widely depending on the diamond, design, and materials you choose. The good news is that going custom gives you something most people don’t expect: flexibility. Instead of working within a fixed price tag, you’re able to shape the ring and the investment around what matters most to you.

At Ashley Schenkein Jewelry Design in Denver, we’ve designed our process to be collaborative and transparent, so you feel confident in every decision from the very beginning.

Average Cost of a Custom Engagement Ring in Denver

While every custom ring is unique, most fall within the following general ranges:

    Budget Range

    What You Can Expect

    $3,000 – $5,000

Simpler settings, such as a solitaire with or without additional side stones, including smaller natural diamonds or larger alternative gemstones or lab diamonds, heirloom redesign projects

    $5,000 – $10,000

Larger center stones, hidden halos, or more detailed custom settings

    $10,000+

Premium diamonds, intricate designs, or heavier gold or platinum

Rather than working from fixed price points, custom design allows you to prioritize what matters most. Whether that’s the diamond's size, the uniqueness of the setting, or meaningful personal details.

Understanding the 4 Cs of Diamonds

Most people begin their diamond journey with the 4 Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat.

These are the traditional standards used to evaluate diamonds, but they’re best understood as a framework, not a checklist you need to maximize across the board.

Cut is often the most important factor because it determines how a diamond reflects light. A well-cut diamond will have more brilliance and sparkle, even if it’s smaller in size. It’s the quality that people notice first, often without realizing why. This is what we like to call the “sparkle factor” when showing diamonds to clients at our Denver studio.

Color refers to how white or colorless a diamond appears. While completely colorless diamonds are highly valued, many stones with slight warmth can still look beautiful, especially when paired with the right metal. For example, a diamond with a hint of warmth can feel perfectly cohesive in a yellow gold setting. We are seeing a large rise in clients choosing a warmer hue of natural diamonds.

Clarity measures the natural inclusions found within a diamond. In most cases, these inclusions are not visible to the naked eye, which means you don’t necessarily need a flawless grade to achieve a clean, elegant look. The goal is to choose a diamond that appears eye-clean rather than technically perfect.

Carat refers to the weight, or size, of the diamond. While it’s often the most talked-about factor, bigger doesn’t always mean better. The right carat weight is the one that feels proportionate to your hand, is balanced within your ring design and works well for your lifestyle.

Rather than trying to optimize all four categories, we help you find the right balance, so your diamond looks beautiful without overextending your budget.

    Choosing the Right Diamond Shape

Shape is one of the most defining aspects of your engagement ring and often the first thing people notice.

Some shapes, like round brilliant diamonds, are timeless and known for their exceptional sparkle. Others, like oval or pear shapes, create a more elongated, softer look that feels modern and elegant. Emerald and radiant cuts tend to feel more structured and architectural, while cushion cuts offer a balance between softness and definition.

Choosing a shape is less about trends and more about personal preference. It’s about what resonates with you and how that shape complements the overall design of your ring.

    Natural vs Lab-Grown Diamonds

Another important decision when designing custom diamond engagement rings is choosing between natural and lab-grown diamonds.

Visually, they are nearly identical. Both offer the same brilliance and beauty, and without specialized equipment, they are indistinguishable to the eye.

The difference lies in their origin and pricing. Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments and often allow for a larger or higher-quality stone within the same budget. Natural diamonds, on the other hand, are formed over millions of years and carry a sense of rarity and tradition that many people value.

This choice often comes down to what feels most meaningful to you. Both options can result in a stunning ring. It’s simply a matter of preference.

Setting Priorities Based on Your Budget

One of the advantages of going custom is the ability to prioritize what matters most.

Instead of selecting a pre-designed ring at a fixed price, you can decide how to allocate your budget. Some clients choose to focus on a larger center stone, while others prioritize cut quality or intricate design details.

There’s no single right way to approach this. What matters is understanding what you notice most when you look at a ring. For some, it’s size. For others, it’s sparkle or overall design.

Our role is to guide you through those decisions, helping you understand where adjustments can be made without compromising the overall look and feel of your ring.

Seeing the Diamond Within the Design

A diamond doesn’t exist in isolation; it lives within a setting, and that setting can dramatically influence how the stone appears.

The same diamond can look brighter, larger, or more delicate depending on how it’s set. Metal color, prong style, and band thickness all play a role in how the diamond is perceived.

For example, a thinner band can make a diamond appear more prominent, while certain settings can enhance light reflection and brilliance. This is why choosing a diamond for a custom engagement ring isn’t just about the stone itself; it’s about how it interacts with the overall design.

    The Value of Expert Guidance

With so many variables to consider, choosing a diamond can feel overwhelming at first. This is where working with an experienced jeweler makes all the difference.

Instead of navigating countless options on your own, you’re guided through a curated selection that aligns with your vision, your budget, and your timeline. The process becomes more focused and intentional.

At Ashley Schenkein Jewelry Design, we take the time to understand what matters to you, so we can present options that feel aligned rather than overwhelming. It’s not about showing you everything—it’s about showing you what’s right.

Finding the Right Diamond for You

It’s easy to get caught up in the idea of finding the “perfect” diamond, but perfection looks different for everyone.

The right diamond is the one that feels balanced within your design, reflects your personal style, and fits comfortably within your priorities. It doesn’t need to be the largest or the highest grade—it simply needs to feel right when you see it. There are a lot of factors that go into grading a diamond, but the most important aspect is which one speaks to you when viewing diamonds in person.

That’s what makes custom diamond engagement rings so special. Every choice is intentional, and every detail contributes to a piece that feels uniquely yours.

Start Your Custom Diamond Engagement Ring Journey

If you’re considering a custom engagement ring, choosing the diamond is one of the most meaningful parts of the process.

You don’t need to have all the answers before you begin. In fact, most clients don’t.

The best place to start is with a conversation. From there, we guide you through each step, helping you understand your options, refine your vision, and ultimately choose a diamond that brings your ring to life.

Because in the end, it’s not just about selecting a diamond. It’s about creating something that tells your story.
